How to decorate a wall.. A decorating moment from Phoebe Howard's tutorial on accessorizing walls.

Taken straight from Mrs. Howard's Facebook page, I found this to be fascinating, so for all my decorating friends, family and new readers, please enjoy!

It's no wonder I struggle just hanging a picture, I use the "hammer a  nail here then there" method.

Weekly Q&A with Phoebe - Using Elevations

Question: How do you figure out what you are going to hang on the wall? Do you sketch it out, or do you tape up templates on the wall, or just keep trying until you get it right?

Phoebe's Answer:  In our business , we need to be as prepared as possible, and that means we plan all details well in advance of our installations. If we are uncertain about how something will look on the wall, we draw an elevation in CAD, and then tinker with it until we are satisfied with the drawing. We always make on-site adjustments, but we find that drawing it in advance really helps. Here are some examples:

This client had a fabulous collection of blanc de chine jars and I wanted to find the right home for them. I had a custom cabinet made for them, and drew all the shapes of the jars, to adjust all of the shelving and the size of the cabinet. The one measurement I forget to check was the door opening, It fit by 1/2" - Whew!

In this room with an angled ceiling, I had to place the junction box for the swing arm lamps months prior to the furniture going in, so we drew it out, and it worked!

In this bedroom below, I wanted to hang something unusual and energetic over the bed, something three dimensional. I chose this assortment of creamware plates and kudu horns. Sketching this also allowed me to check that the shapes of the headboard and curtain valances were in good harmony with one another.

In this bedroom I had an assortment of nautical charts I wanted to frame, and this made me confident of their sizes to frame them. I felt something was lacking, so I added the convex mirrors.

In this dining room, we were upholstering the walls in this printed fabric from the chair rail up. The fabric
was sewn in Florida, and transported to the house out of state. I wanted to make sure that the
sconces were centered inside of a medallion. Good job, Jim!

Here is another one of Jim's projects below. The last thing you want to deal with on a scaffold on a stairway is guesswork about where to hang things. This drawing erased all concerns and made for a seamless and beautiful installation of these architectural engravings.

Again, another situation below, where guesswork about size of framing and spacing,
was erased by advanced planning.

We even draw our curtains on an elevation, to make sure they are the proper proportions. This is a job that Jim did in Chicago. The picture lights also needed to be placed early on, and an elevation removes all of that guesswork.

Sure hope you enjoyed seeing Mrs. Howard's designs, maybe they will inspire you.

Lots of blessings my friends.
