Drummond Island, no sideliners these.

Monday morning, Aug. 15, 2011,
Drummond Island, Michigan.

When the first annual Slush Jumping Day was announced Candis Collick was the first to sign up and the first one to jump into the melting ice on the shores of Drummond Island, Michigan.
Her husband and grown son have been known to plead, "Just don't do anything stupid".

Not a stupid decision, but oh so courageous;
on Monday of this week, Aug. 15, Candis and  her friend, Nella, embarked on;

The Great Circumnavigation Adventure!
These two adventure addicted women will paddle kayaks around Drummond Island (depicted in the globe) . They expect the trip to take 5 - 6 days. The idea arose during a conversation in a restaurant with friends.
Candis says;
"Why set this particular goal? There is so much I have given up. So much I use to do I am not able to do now. I am a former adrenaline junkie who still needs a fix now and then.
The doses are much smaller and they have to last me much longer."
Candis is a 52 year old wife, mom and grandmother.
She'll literally jump at the chance to prove her heart is still beating.

Candis and granddaughter

Two beautifully rugged women
after a training session.

The training sessions photos are simply gorgeous, makes me want to head to the U.P. over to Detour Village and take the ferry boat to Drummond.

The vehicle;  a 12 foot especially made for women kayak, with one dry well for supplies.

The dry well packed, cut up "noodle" helps protect knees..
7 days of dehydrated food, water filtration system, a backpack solar battery pack to charge an iphone for the GPS and to contact her granddaughter twice a day for location updates.

A Jet Boil for cooking..
(no coffee pot?)

A gift from her husband; a camera for photo journaling.
Waterproof to 33 feet, dust proof, shockproof against a drop of up
to 6 feet,
and freeze proof down to -10°C.
Looking forward to seeing her photos.

Purchases included a small case outfitted with an updated First Aid Kit,
including a compact pill organizer for her daily chemo meds.

Chemo meds?
Candis has lupus. Her team of doctors administered her monthly shot, then gave her the "OK" to take on the challenge of physically exerting the energy needed to propel a kayak around the 150 mile shoreline. Also, sleep in the wilds, the eastern side of Drummond Island is very rugged territory.
(and eat dehydrated food ...yum).

Quoting her; "I thank You God for most this amazing day: for the leaping greenly spirits of trees and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything which is natural which is infinite which is yes!* - e.e.cummings
This is my Birthday sky on Drummond - I am the most content woman in the world!"

Her husband "Barry wishes he was going, - first for the adventure! Second because he worries so. I have had many close calls over the years and he never takes a single day for granted that we are able to spend together. We have shared my plan and practice adventures daily. He is the stable, logical one in this marriage and told me to have fun BUT don't drown on him!"

"I have no fears about the trip. Not now anyway. And I don't think there will be along the way. You block your dreams when you allow your fears to grow bigger than your faith.

What do I fear? I fear sitting back and watching the world pass me by. I fear not feeling my heart beat. I don't fear dying. I fear being alive and not living." Candis Collick.
I admire both the physical and mental strength of these two women.
It's been a gorgeous week up north and they are on course to finish according to
"The Plan".

Still on the Sidelines,
Grandma

Following up; They're back! On Thursday evening 8:30.. did it four days.
Must be they didn't want to sleep on the ground one more time..
